Ayurvedic third party work runs under a different licence system from allopathic medicines, and many brand owners find this out only after their cartons are printed. The plant, the product permission, the raw herbs and the label all follow AYUSH rules, and each of them affects what you can sell and what you can say about it.
The Ayurvedic product manufacturers listed above make products under your own brand. Below is what to check and decide before you send them your product list.
Plant licence and product permission
An Ayurvedic manufacturing unit holds a licence on Form 25-D, issued by the state licensing authority for Ayurveda, Siddha and Unani drugs. Ask for the copy and check the name, address and validity. Every product made under that licence also needs its own permission from the same authority.
This is where the split between classical and proprietary products matters. Classical formulations are made exactly as described in the authoritative books recognised under the Drugs and Cosmetics Act, for example Triphala churna, Ashwagandharishta or Chyawanprash, and they carry the name given in the text. Proprietary Ayurvedic medicines are formulas made from permitted ingredients and sold under a brand name. They need more supporting documents for permission and can take longer. Ask the plant which of your products it already holds permission for and which will need a fresh application.
Dosage forms and what each needs
Most Ayurvedic ranges mix several forms, and few plants make every one of them in-house.
- Churna: pouch or jar packing, moisture control, and the fineness of the powder
- Syrups, arishtas and asavas: bottle and cap choice, and for arishtas a fermentation period that lengthens the lead time
- Vati and tablets: made from powders or extracts, with coating and strip or bottle packing
- Taila (oils): for pain relief and hair care, with bottle size and leak-proof caps to decide
- Capsules: usually filled with herbal extracts, in gelatin or HPMC shells
Ask which forms the plant runs on its own lines and which it gets made elsewhere. A plant that sends half your range to other units is harder to hold responsible when something goes wrong.
Raw herb quality and testing
Ayurvedic quality starts with the raw material. The same herb varies with its source, the season it was collected and how it was stored. Ask how the plant buys herbs, whether each lot is identified on receipt, and what is tested: identity, foreign matter, moisture and ash values for raw material, and heavy metals and microbial load for finished products where required. Careful Ayurvedic product manufacturers keep these records lot by lot and will show them without fuss.
Extract-based products should be backed by the extract supplier's COA showing what the extract is standardised to. Ask for a COA with every batch of finished goods. Institutional and export buyers often want heavy metal reports separately, so confirm the plant can provide them before you quote to such buyers.
Label rules and claims
An Ayurvedic label has to show the ingredients with their quantities, the words marking it as an Ayurvedic medicine, the licence number, dose, batch number and dates. Classical products also cite the reference text. Your artwork should go to the plant's regulatory person before printing, not after.
Keep claims within what the rules allow. Words like "treat" or "permanent relief", or any claim covered by the Drugs and Magic Remedies Act, can get your stock seized and your brand name into trouble. If you plan to sell some herbal products as nutraceuticals instead, they fall under FSSAI rules, with their own label limits.
Selling Ayurvedic products has its own licence requirements at the state level, and these differ from state to state. Check with your state office before you appoint distributors.
Post your Ayurvedic requirement
Use the form on this page. Write each product and say whether it is classical (with its textual name) or proprietary (with the ingredient list and quantities), along with the form, pack size, quantity per batch and your target date. Posting is free and your number is not shown publicly. The requirement goes only to Ayurvedic product manufacturers making that kind of range, and they call you back with rates and the permission status of each product.
